Mark Funkhouser for Mayor Campaign Newsletter

News from the Doublewide
Weekly Funkhouser Campaign Update
16 February 2007

Dear Friends,

Well, as I’m sure that most of you already know, the hot topic this week was the Kansas City’s Star’s full and complete endorsement of Funk for Mayor! I first heard the news when I was diligently working for the big lug, while the lug himself was relaxing with the Sunday newspaper when, all of a sudden, Funk comes up behind me and shoves the editorial page in front of my keyboard. Needless to say, the rest of the morning was shot as far as work was concerned. Funk quietly reveled in the news, while I tried to learn how to breathe again. That the endorsement came earlier than usual and with only one candidate endorsed as opposed to the usual two, was just icing on the cake.

As for this week’s happenings:

Another surprise this week was the 3rd place ranking that Funk received at the UMKC forum. No, not that he only placed 3rd, but that he placed at all as he didn’t attend the forum! Remember he had to miss that forum to bring home some bacon for his family for a change?

A little bird told us (a supposedly credible little bird) that a poll was conducted and the results went like this: 3rd place - Nace, 2nd place - Brooks and 1 place, yes folks, our very own Funk. It won’t be too much longer before the only poll that matters comes back in our favor though.

The Funky Blues Fundraiser is exactly a week from today - I can’t wait! Not only is the music going to be fabulous, but also, my daughter is flying home from Pittsburgh for the show and then she’ll be staying with us until the Primary. Even though Tara & I talk every day, it’s not the same as seeing her beautiful little face, and I haven’t seen that face for six long weeks now. As for the show, Knuckleheads has opened the seating to the public and is now offering general admission tickets. For more information, please go to their website at www.knuckleheadskc.com, or you can buy a ticket at the door the night of the show. You can still help with our fundraising efforts as Knuckleheads is graciously donating all proceeds from the ticket sales to our campaign. Please come out and join the fun. There will be limited edition “Funk for Mayor” t-shirts and hats on sale that night as well. If you’d like, Funk can sign them for you; although I know that you’d much rather have my signature on the shirt instead of his.

The doublewide was hopping last Saturday – we had at least 30 volunteers show up for the phone bank and door walking efforts. We will repeat the performance each Saturday until the Primary - if you’d like to be a part of it, please give us a call at 283-3535.

We hit the big time - we’re going to be on network TV! Can you believe we’ve come this far? With a hope and a prayer, we’ve ordered political ad time for the few days right before the Primary. Not too many spots – just enough to continue to get the word out, yet not too many to make the viewing audience grown from seeing my guy’s face sweet little face on their screen too many times. We would love for you to be in the commercial. If you’re interested, please come out to the Scout statue in Penn Valley Park this Sunday at 3:30 pm. The filming shouldn’t take more than an hour or so. I picked Sunday because it’s supposed to be 50 degrees and sunny – we’ll keep our fingers crossed for that prediction.

So far, this is where the Funk will be in public this week:

Sunday, February 18th:
10 am – Live Radio Interview
KMBZ 980

Tuesday, February 20th:
8 pm – Fundraiser
Californo’s – 4124 Pennsylvania Avenue

Wednesday, February 21st:
3 pm – Live Radio Interview
1510 AM – The Gabby Haze Show

Thursday, February 22nd:
5:30 pm – Fundraiser
Cascone’s – 8131 North Oak Trafficway

Friday, February 23rd:
8 pm – Funky Blues Fundraiser
Slick Ballinger Sings the Blues
Knuckleheads Saloon
2700 Rockchester Street

Saturday, February 24th:
3 pm – Forum
40-46 North Neighborhood & Crime Watch
Kansas City North Community Center Auditorium
3930 NE Antioch Road

Well, listing all those appearances has made me tired just thinking about the upcoming week, so for now, I’m signing off to go rest up. We’ll see you on the trail.

All the best,

Gloria & Mark

Mark Funkhouser for Mayor

Ingrid and I are supporting Mark Funkhouser for Mayor of Kansas City in the February 27th election.

To find out more about Funkhouser his website is www.markfunkhouser.com - catchy huh?

He has a clear vision of what Kansas City should be. He is not afraid to speak up and and answer questions. That is a refreshing change from most politicians. Ingrid really likes the fact that he is not afraid to talk about Kansas City Schools. He actually will talk about the fact that education is critical to a liveable city. I like the idea that he is not hesitant to say that TIF is broken and must be fixed.

I also like the idea that Funk is doing a fundraiser down at Knuckleheads. That is a blues bar that is in the East Bottoms about a mile from our house. That event is set for Friday, February 23rd. It will be an excellent opportunity to meet him informally.

First post

I have started this blog to link with my newsletter. I have found I write too much. So, my plan is to shorten my newsletter and link to the blog for longer articles. At least that is my theory. Let's see how this works.
